Day 10 was probably the most emotional day of our trip, today was the day we were leaving Vavuniya. Within a few days we had bonded so well with the students and the people there. We did not imagine that we would have created such a bond at the beginning of the trip.Tears were flowing, we really didn't feel like leaving.

We all left Vavuniya with a heavy heart and headed to Polonnaruwa.Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.Pictures of the ruined city,
The thing which really grabbed our attention was the Buddha statue which was craved on granite stone. The cool thing is that the granite stone actually grows ! So the statue grows with it s well. But the statues tend to break as the stone does not grow according to the statues shape. The statues were built by the best stone carvers at that time. Once the statues were completed, their hands were cut off so they could not carve such a monument again.
A very fun learning experience it was !
